Striking colorful brick building at the beginning of the Stationsstraat, erected by the city between 1895 and 1899 as a justice of the peace. At this location was one of the oldest buildings in the city. In the 18th century it was inhabited and restored by grain merchant Fruytinck who sold the building to the city in 1806 to house the subprefecture. Afterwards rented and occupied by baron d'Exaerde. From 1831 it served as a gendarmerie barracks.
