Chapel in the Beeltjens.
Beeltjens
You can certainly call the Beeltjens the backyard of Westerlo. Especially on weekends, walkers and joggers enjoy the nature and landscape there. The pattern of the avenues in the shape of a star is very typical. The first avenues were laid out in the early 18th century by Jan Philips Eugeen de Merode. The Beeltjens are particularly known for the great variety of coniferous and deciduous trees. Here lies also the highest point of the municipality, the Asberg, a sand dune 24 meters high. In prehistoric times, the hill is believed to have been used as a burial site. When part of the hill was excavated in 1860, urns containing ashes from cremation were found.
