In addition to the Union Bridge in Mannekensvere, this is the second bridge over the Yser where heavy fighting took place. When the Germans cross the Tervate bridge a little further into the hamlet of Tervate, where the Yser makes a bend, they can also shoot the Belgians from the side.
As a result, the Schoorbakke bridgehead cannot be preserved and the Belgians have to give way to Stuivekenskerke. When the Germans break through here too and the Yser Line threatens to collapse completely, the underwater settlement brings salvation.
The Belgians entrench themselves behind the Nieuwpoort-Diksmuide railway line. The Germans had to withdraw from the flooded area between the Yser and the railway. They do retain Stuivekenskerke and some higher outposts in flooded areas.
On the Schoorbakke bridge hangs today a plaque for the 2nd and 22nd, 3rd and 23rd Line Regiments.
