The grave of the unknown soldier is a monument in Brussels where, on November 11, 1922, the remains of an unknown soldier were buried. The monument is located at the foot of the Congress Column, which commemorates the National Congress of 1830 that ratified the Belgian Constitution. In 1922, a coffin was exhumed from five different military cemeteries belonging to a fallen Belgian soldier whose name and military rank were unknown. At those cemeteries, soldiers were buried who had fallen during World War I in battles in Antwerp, Liège, Namur, at the Yser Front, and in the area of the liberation offensive in Flanders. The five coffins were transferred and laid out in the railway station of Bruges.
