The Kouter with the Sunday flower market and music kiosk is one of the most well-known cultural heritage sites in Ghent. In the Middle Ages, it served as a public meeting place, horse market, competition ground for shooting guilds, and festival square. In the Napoleonic era, it was called 'Place d'armes'. Later it became a promenade square and since 1843 has been the annual dance venue for the 'Bal populaire' during the Ghent Festivities. During World War II, it was used as a deportation site. Recent redesign featuring bronze giant leaves by American artist Jessica Diamont.

Lut de Block (1952), freelance journalist, Flemish poet, and prose writer. She debuted with the poetry collection Vader (1984, Yang Poetry Prize). Her remarkable vitalism and the ambivalent female perspective on relationships and life and death were best expressed in Entre deux mers (1997). The short novel Huizen van gras was published in 1993. She is a member of the Honest Arts Movement. The poem was plastically designed by Belgian artist Laurent Desaever.
