Battle of the Silver Helmets
WWI => 12 August 1914
During the invasion of the Germans (WWI), the Belgian army won a battle against the German army near Halen.
The Belgian army, which was retreating from the advancing German army after the fall of the city of Liège and its forts, had decided to take up position behind the banks of the Gete. The aim was to slow down the advance of the German army (stopping it was not possible given the superior numbers) so that the French troops could organize themselves better and English troops could join Belgian territory in time.
The Battle of Halen can be considered a Belgian success, as the Germans were defeated in this battle. For example, their captain was taken prisoner.
The advance had been halted, or at least greatly slowed down.
This battle can also be considered historic because it is the last battle in modern history, where the attack was launched by the cavalry.
After all, the Belgian cavalry had chosen to wait for the Germans in hiding (away from the horses, so ahw as infantrymen). This tactic worked and resulted in the death of many German soldiers and horses...
Finally, this stroke is also worth knowing for cyclists. After all, many of the Belgian soldiers were so-called "cyclists". They then moved around with a bicycle. Quite revolutionary for the time. In addition, it was a quick way of getting around.
Also note that there were also bicycles that could be folded in two, so that the soldiers could carry them on their backs during the sneak trips....
The bike ride runs through the fields where the battle was fought.
