Wijnegemhof

In the Middle Ages, the Wijnegemhof was the centre of the fief of the lords of Wijnegem. This castle is located along the Wijnegemhofstraat, not far from the Chaussée de Louvain. Several noble families succeeded each other in this castle: the lords of Wijnegem, the knights of Diegem, the family 't Serclaes and the viscounts of der Noot. At the beginning of the 18th century, Wijnegemhof was a typical closed Brabant farm. New buildings were erected in 1764. We now got a toy combined with a farmhouse. The new building was built in Regence style. The whole consists of a gatehouse with a curved hipped roof, a main building with mansard windows parallel to the Chaussée de Louvain and an appurtenance attached to the gatehouse parallel to the Wijnegemhofstraat. This part without an upper floor was probably the farm. The barn and the stables have been demolished. The whole was surrounded by moats. Above the entrance gate we find the year 1764 and the coat of arms of the van der Noot family with five oyster shells and the coat of arms 'Respice finem'. People often speak of the Boonespachthof after the Boon family, who leased the farm at the beginning of the 19th century. In the middle of the 19th century, Wijnegemhof was owned by Count Jacques Coghen, the first Belgian minister of finance and an ancestor of Queen Paola. Since the end of the 19th century, Wijnegemhof has been owned by the Counts, later Princes de Merode van Everberg, who rented out the estate.
