In the arboretum of Wespelaar (Haacht), they are deeply in love with the magnolia. From April onward, you can admire the 50 species (and about 400 cultivars) again: because there are so many, there is always something in bloom until August.
The most beautiful among all those magnolias? “I could give you a different answer in every season,” laughs director Koen Camelbeke. “At the moment, I would say: the star magnolia. With its bushy form and loose flowers, it is also very suitable for the garden. Moreover, this species tolerates some frost, so the flowers do not immediately turn brown. A lot also depends on the space you have and your preference. In Wespelaar, we specialize in magnolias with yellow flowers. But if I had a large garden myself, I would choose Magnolia ‘Felix Jury’, with its spectacular, dark flowers.”
