Description

Via Goudenregen we arrive at Castle Cantecroy. In the 16th century, it was transformed into a stronghold that withstood the Spanish for a long time. Now that peace has long returned, you can enjoy walking around.

In the early 20th century, the castle was owned by the couple Arthur De Groodt and Juliette Adant. They restored it and lived there until 1934. During that time, many celebrities visited. For example, poetess Alice Nahon lived in the chapel, and Albert Einstein once stayed there while fleeing from anti-Semitism in Nazi Germany. It was then a center for intellectuals, artists, and politicians. In the second half of the 20th century, the neglected castle was restored by Rosalie Van Daele, owner of the chain store De Wolmolen. She had several buildings added in the style of the 16th century.

Today, the apartments are occupied as assisted living and host the event hall and restaurant Cavalieri. The old parts, such as the square rampart with bastions, the entrance building, the chapel, and the farm on the ring wall, are protected as a monument. You can book a guided group tour via kristel@activational.be or reserve for a group walk on 17/8 (2 PM) or 28/9 (10:30 AM).
