Meerhout has a rich mill history. In each village there was a mill and many miller families colored daily life. When many mills in the Kempen threatened to disappear, Meerhout played a pioneering role in the revaluation of the Flemish mill heritage. Currently, the municipality has two windmills and one water mill.
Watermill
Above the entrance of this restored building of the watermill, the year 1678 is shown by means of wall anchors. In the past, the mill had two wheels through which both oak bark and grain could be ground. Just after the First World War, the mill supplied electricity. When the miller stopped the wheel in the evening, he stopped his fellow villagers by interrupting the flow several times. That earned him the name Peer Plimp.
