The fort is part of the Brialmont defences and was completed in 1864. It is one of the best preserved forts and has remarkably high ramparts. In addition to its military-historical value, the fort is important today for both recreation and nature. The large canal is a point of attraction for water-bound species such as water bats. At the entrance of the fortress lives a very large population of common toad, alpine and small newt. The fort was gradually reforested and thus became attractive to typical forest dwellers such as Solomon's seal the oak page. This is where an apex predator lives: the tawny owl. In the open fields around the fort, the common pipistrelle hunts insects.
