Falcon women's monastery

The Falcon Sisters Monastery, or Falcon Monastery, is a former monastery of the Falcon Sisters in Antwerp, of which only a monumental entrance gate remains today, the Falcon Gate from 1671. The monastery itself was demolished in 1810.
The Falcon Gate is located at Falcon Square. The namesake of the square and monastery is Falco de Lampagne, who was the director of the Antwerp Ducal Mint in the fourteenth century. He owned a large estate on this site that was called Falconhof and Falconsbroek. Around the year 1350, he founded a place of worship for 'young daughters' and widows, known as the Falcon Sisters, who lived according to the rules of Saint Augustine. However, only a few years later, in 1354, Falco de Lampagne died. He left the sisters with significant debts, which forced them to move to a rented location in the houses of a certain Willem Draeck in the city center. A large inheritance received by one of the sisters enabled the Falcon Sisters to repurchase the Falconhof around 1420. In the following period, the monastery estate was significantly expanded, including a church, an inn, and several houses. The monastery was struck multiple times by the bubonic plague in the fifteenth century. From that time also comes a work that gives some insight into the contemporary monastic life, "Vision and Example" by Sister Jacomijne Costers.
