The IJse is a river of Belgium that rises in the nucleus Groenendaal, in the middle of the Zoniënwoud, tri-regional forest, and flows into the Dijle in the Dode Beemde in Neerijse. Since the eighteenth century the course of the river was often changed, mainly to increase the unevenness and to be able to activate water mills, the lower parts, swampy, were transformed into nurseries. The multiple man-made transformations, such as corrections, greatly reduced the ability to store high water as well as the biodiversity of the river. It is planned to renaturalize, as much as possible, the course of the river, outside the built-up areas and create fish passages where it is not possible to return to the natural course.
