The prison of Dendermonde was opened in 1863, making it one of the older prisons in Belgium. Until the opening of the prison in Beveren-Waas, the prison in the centre of the city was the only one in the former judicial district of Dendermonde. The prison serves as both a detention centre and a penal house. There is room for 168 inmates, but the prison is overcrowded with 250 inmates regularly placed and is occasionally in the news due to escapes and strikes by the guards due to overcrowding and a lack of staff.
