Belgian military cemetery of Oeren

The Belgian military cemetery of Oeren is a military cemetery for the fallen of the First World War and is located around the former Saint Apollonia Church in the Belgian place Oeren, a district of Alveringem. The cemetery was protected as a monument in 2008. Oeren suffered greatly during the First World War. In the summer of 1915, the Oeren cemetery was established around the former parish church as a temporary emergency solution. The cemetery in Alveringem was at that time overcrowded. After having dug around forty graves, the military authorities decided to bury the bodies in Adinkerke from then on. However, the funeral ceremonies still took place in Alveringem. In 1917, this cumbersome method was abandoned, and the fallen were given a place in Oeren from then on. Ultimately, 651 fallen soldiers found their final resting place there, including some French artillerymen and 3 Germans.
