The creek lakes, on the border of the former municipalities of Sint-Gillis-Waas, Meerdonk and Vrasene, consist of a winding string of small and large puddles, reed beds, willow groves and swamps. All these lakes, pools and connecting waterways together form the Saleghem Creek area.
Together with the sometimes flowery dikes, the poplars and the many pollard willows, they form a landscape with a rich nature that is worth preserving. Along the creek, volunteers from Natuurpunt Waasland Noord manage various areas. On the creeks there are 24 hectares of contiguous nature reserve which is accessible to the public.
