Bivouac La Roche Trouée is located about 2.5 km from the village of Nismes, 3.5 km from Nismes via the GR route that first passes through the remarkable geological formation 'Fondry des Chiens'. It is the only bivouac site that does not run directly along the GR route; it is situated 350 meters away, signposted from the GR. This bivouac site is named after a geological limestone formation that can be seen further towards Nismes.
Bivouac La Roche Trouée is actually on a large grassy area that is also used for gathering work materials for forest management and as a wood stacking area. Therefore, you are not really allowed to use the long rows of neatly stacked wood to make a fire in the existing fire pit. However, there is plenty of other kindling available in the area. It is spacious, fairly open terrain. Behind the bivouac site, there is an asphalt road 50 meters away that has little traffic. Other than a passing car, there is no ambient noise. There is no water supply in the immediate vicinity. In Nismes, you can shop at a Louis Delhaize that is open every day. You will also find all kinds of restaurants and a tourism office there. Several nature reserves around Nismes house very special plants and insects.
