Eduard van Steenbergen, who would later be responsible for the design of the Royal Athenaeum and the District House in Deurne, designed this garden neighborhood in 1925. Due to the war, many houses were destroyed, leading to a housing shortage. The government began financing large-scale construction projects like this one to solve the problem. About two hundred homes were built for the Unitas neighborhood. At that time, Deurne was not very urbanized and still resembled a rural municipality in many areas. The purpose of this garden neighborhood was to combine the advantages of the city and the countryside. Due to the war, numerous architects fled abroad. There, they were influenced by local architectural styles, bringing new ideas back home. This is also apparent in the Unitas neighborhood, whose style strongly resembles English cottages.
