The rule of Benedict stated that the monks were never allowed to leave the abbey. Everything they needed had to be there: an infirmary, but also: a brewery, a mill, kitchen gardens, an orchard, and a bakery.
The monks lived according to the rule of Benedict and had to take three vows: of poverty, chastity, and obedience to the abbot.
The vow of poverty did not mean that the monk lived in poverty, but that he had no personal possessions. Everything belonged to the abbey.
The monks lived according to a fixed schedule with a total of 8 hours of work, 8 hours of prayer, and 8 hours of rest.
