Here was already a watermill on the Molenbeek in 1210, owned by the Sint-Baafsabdij in Ghent. Another text (a lease) shows this property in 1480. The mill was still in use until 1959. The Molenbeek has a decay of 4.5 meters at the mill building. There is no bypass present. On the left bank there are buildings, while on the right bank there is meadow and wood edge over a length of about 100 meters. The metal top gear is almost completely rusted away. The mechanism is still present, with three stone pairs. Brick building under gable roof (not parallel to the street, mechanical tiles), from the 19th century. Façade with rectangular door under wooden lintel. Side gable on the stream side on cemented substructure, rectangular and segmental arched windows. On February 17, 1994, the mill was protected as a monument (including the mill building, the mill equipment with accessories and the lock with both walls) and together with its surroundings as a village view. The Flemish Land Agency (VLM) purchased the watermill on the Island in the Houtems centre in 2007. Mill house and grinder are being repaired and are eligible for a tourist destination.
