The Nete Canal connects the Albert Canal near Viersel with the navigable part of the Nete, downstream from Lier near Duffel, which flows into the Rupel a little further on, the waterway to the Scheldt. The canal allows ships from the south or west to reach the Albert Canal without passing through Antwerp.
The section between the Rupel and Duffel rivers was completed in 1839. The section to Viersel via Lier followed in 1952.
Several marinas can be found along the Nete Canal, including Duffel, Lier and Emblem. There are also a few water sports clubs located on the Nete Canal.
