Il Canale della Nete collega il Canale Alberto presso Viersel con la parte navigabile della Nete, a valle di Lier presso Duffel, che poco più avanti sfocia nel Rupel, la via d'acqua verso la Schelda. Attraverso il canale le navi provenienti da sud o da ovest possono raggiungere il Canale Alberto senza dover passare per Anversa.
La parte tra il Rupel e Duffel fu completata nel 1839. La parte verso Viersel lungo Lier seguì nel 1952.
Lungo il Canale della Nete si trovano diversi porti turistici, tra cui vari a Duffel, Lier ed Emblem. Inoltre, ci sono alcuni club sportivi acquatici situati lungo il Canale della Nete.
