Vaalbeek or Valebeke comes from 'vale' or valley, a dale and brook, a small watercourse that originates in the lower meadows of low Blanden and Vaalbeek. The name Zandeke or 't Senneke appears as early as the 14th century and refers to the sandy soil in this area. Vaalbeek is now the administrative center of the merger municipality of Oud-Heverlee. The new town hall was built in 1978. In the 19th century, the children of Vaalbeek mostly went to school in Blanden. From 1913 onwards, a school was started in the living room of the corner house of Grezstraat and the path to the Magdalenakapel. The façade of the house still shows traces of sharpening the slate pencils of the school children from that time. Behind the current modern police station stood the first real school buildings, along with the town hall from 1929 until the merger in 1976.
