In 1860, grain merchant Emmanuel Slaghmuylder founded a brewery in Sint-Jorisstraat in the historic city centre. On the wooden barrels was written "E Slaghmuylder" from which the family tradition arose that the names of the sons in the family were invented that started with an E, which was common in that generation. However, these first barrels were not yet suitable for real trade. These were located in pubs and were filled on the spot, but not transported from the brewery. The later editions of barrels only have "Slaghmuylder" carved into them.
