Ivy

Source: KU Leuven Plantengids

Description

Ivy seems to be an evergreen woody vine. The plant clings to a wall or tree with short anchoring roots. Ivy provides a good sleeping and hiding place for various birds and bats. The flowers of ivy attract butterflies and insects. The berries are eaten by blackbirds, starlings, and wood pigeons during the winter until spring.

An ivy growing against a tree is not a problem. It's a misconception that the tree will die. It does not extract nutrients from the tree with its anchoring roots; these roots are solely for support. If the tree becomes weakened, the ivy can overgrow it.
