First place of worship dating back to the time of Christianization and according to tradition founded by Saint Livinus. Elevated to parish church in 1230. The old church was rebuilt in 1724-1726 after the tower collapsed in 1723, with the tower designed by the Ghent architect J. Motte. According to a plan drawn up in 1778 in response to the expansion of the church (widening of the northern aisle), it was a three-aisled church with a transept, crossing tower, and flat-ended choir and side chapels. Commissioned by the mayor Marquis of Rode, Rodriguez de Evora y Vega, a new church was built in the second quarter of the 19th century according to the design of the Ghent architect Louis Minard. The new church was built on the site of the old one, preserving the former crossing tower in the new façade (to the east); the church was now oriented to the west instead of the east, and probably material from the old church was reused.
