The 'Deutscher Soldatenfriedhof' in Langemark is particularly moving due to the power of simplicity. Behind the monumental gate of pink Weserberg sandstone lie over 44,000 Germans buried, of whom nearly 25,000 are in a mass grave. More than 3,000 student volunteers from the 22nd to the 27th Reserve Corps found their final resting place here. They fell in October and November 1914 during repeated assaults in the First Battle of Ypres. Because of the large number of students among these volunteers, the cemetery is known as 'Studentenfriedhof'.
The German military cemetery of Langemark is one of the 4 German gathering cemeteries in Belgium. This cemetery is also called "Studentenfriedhof". Indeed, some young German volunteer soldiers fell here during the First Battle of Ypres in 1914. Currently, over 44,300 German bodies rest here. A comrades' tomb has been established near the entrance of the cemetery. It is here that more than half of them were buried. About 17,000 soldiers have been identified. Their names have been engraved on the blocks that stand all around the comrades' tomb.
