In the Middle Ages, the plague - 'the black death' in the vernacular - regularly hit our region hard. Entire generations succumbed to this incurable and highly contagious disease. To prevent further spread of the horrible disease, condemned villagers were locked up in so-called 'plague houses'.
You can also find such a house within the abbey walls in Postel. It probably dates from the 17th century. A well was discovered at the back of the building. The story goes that the deceased plague sufferers ended up directly in a forgotten pit and were covered with quicklime. Recently, the plague house was given a thorough makeover. The cottage, centrally located in the abbey's herb garden, is free to visit. You will find a lot of interesting information about the Kempen heath and sheep, herbs and the plague, the bog myrtle and medieval beer and images of a rare bat colony.
