In our beautiful Gothic church of Sint-Jacobus-de-Meerdere with a choir from the 15th century there are a number of epitaphs belonging to Borsbeek notables such as members of the Werbrouck, Carpentier, de Wael families, etc. For the last restoration of the church there was also an obiit, a mourning sign. An obiit, is a diamond-shaped painting of approx. 1 m by 1 m, on panel or canvas, on which the coat of arms of the deceased is painted with indication of the date of death. During the church funeral service, this mourning sign was placed in front of the catafalque and after the ceremony, for a fee to the clergy, hung on the church wall, often in the high choir.
