Classified as "Major Heritage of Wallonia," the remains of the imposing 11th-century church and the vast convent buildings from the 16th and 18th centuries testify to the long and rich history of the former principality of Stavelot-Malmedy. It is one of the oldest monastic foundations in Belgium.
Brilliantly restored, the abbey houses 3 fascinating museums:
- The Historical Museum of the Principality of Stavelot-Malmedy: It offers a modern, intelligent, and playful journey through the astonishing history of a state from the Ancien Régime; images and sounds, objects and works of art are orchestrated using the latest multimedia techniques; the Wibald Space, an imperial abbot, beautifully illustrates the golden age of the Abbey of Stavelot in the 12th century.
- The Spa-Francorchamps Circuit Museum: Nestled in a green setting between Stavelot, Malmedy, and Spa, the Spa-Francorchamps circuit is still considered by many drivers as "the most beautiful circuit in the world." In the superb vaulted cellars of the abbey, the museum retraces the prestigious history of the circuit.
- The Guillaume Apollinaire Museum: It evokes the stay of the French poet in the region and immerses visitors in his artistic universe through his writings and the insights of the prominent personalities of his time, such as Picasso, Cocteau, Marie Laurencin, and more. Visitors can also enjoy numerous temporary exhibitions, a contemporary art gallery, a shop, a cafeteria, and a pleasant relaxation area in the cloister gardens.
