Nestled in a circus of wooded hills is the village of Coo, its history intertwined with the Amblève and its waterfalls.
The earliest mention of the village dates back to 1307.
As early as 1483, the monks of the abbey of Stavelot are said to have channeled part of the Amblève to power a mill; however, the water sometimes overflowed from the structure and spread over the surrounding rocks. Thus the small waterfall is said to have been born...
The large waterfall is mentioned as early as 1651 and was most certainly shaped to prevent overflow during the major floods of the Amblève that inundated the lower part of the village.
At the very beginning of the 19th century, Coo, part of the "Spa amusements" circuit, attracted crowds... and of distinction! Regional tourism was born!
In 1955, the Télécoo amusement park was established at the foot of the waterfall, perfectly integrated into nature. It has continuously renewed itself to become Plopsa Coo today.
The chairlift remains one of the most attractive activities in Coo... not to mention kayaking.
Finally, the hydroelectric power station represents a strong economic link for the entire region.
Operational since 1973, it is the largest energy accumulation pumping station in service in Belgium.
The underground construction of most of the power station's facilities has preserved the beauty of the natural site, leaving visible to all only the two water reserve basins.
