The Fayembois Castle in Jupille-Sur-Meuse

Description

This castle was built as early as 1625 at the request of Guillaume Fayen on the site of a property belonging to the Church of Liège since 1297. Known as Fayen-bois, named after its patron, the estate passed successively to the families van der Heyden a Bilsa, Rosen, Thiriart, de la Roussellière, and Sépulchre. Dismembered in 1936, the property returned to the heritage of the Diocese of Liège in 1972 and then to the City of Liège, which already possessed a large part of the park.
Of the entire ensemble formed by the castle and the estate farm, only the former lordly living quarters remain. This large rectangular building (22.50 m by 13.50 m) is made of brick and limestone on a sandstone base. A circular turret, leaning against the southeast façade and topped with a polygonal spire, houses the staircase. The door, with a neoclassical appearance, was renewed during the second half of the 18th century. The cross and transom windows, whose sills, transoms, and lintels extended into continuous bands, were replaced at the same time by more classical openings.
The castle was restored from 1993 to 2000 at the initiative of the Promotion des Aînés association. This restoration, completed in 2000, allowed for the building to be returned to its 17th-century appearance: restoration of the cross, transom, and mullioned windows (with a metal structure) and conservation of the rare remnants of decorations dating from the 17th and 19th centuries.
Classified as a monument on March 29, 1968, and as a site on December 21, 1977.
