Saint-Hubert Forest and Freyr Massif

According to legend, it was in the forest of Saint-Hubert that the saint of the same name converted to Christianity. An unrepentant and pagan hunter, he indulged in the pleasures of a worldly life, while neglecting his wife. During a hunting trip in the vicinity of the current city of Borquin, he came face to face with a cruciferous stag haloed by a dazzling light. A voice from heaven then announced to him that he would find his salvation in a life of prayer and mortification, and that he should go and seek counsel with Bishop Lambert. Following this vision, he traveled to towns and villages preaching the Gospels. And on the death of St. Lambert, he in turn became bishop of Tongeren-Maastricht. The forest has not changed much since that time ago and it is not uncommon to come across a deer, or another forest animal. But, if in Hubert's time, it was easy to get lost in the woods, nowadays, a network of marked trails allows walkers or mountain bikers to immerse themselves in nature without the slightest risk. Indeed, a walking map offering 25 hiking circuits and 6 mountain biking circuits is available at the Tourist Office.
