The Perpetual Edict (also known as the Treaty of Marche-en-Famenne) signed by Don Juan of Austria on January 7, 1577, is a document in which the parties acknowledge the contents of the agreements of the Pacification of Ghent between the Spanish crown and the States General of the provinces of the Netherlands.
By this edict, the signatories commit to:
Accept the agreements contained in the Pacification of Ghent;
The rebel provinces will recognize Philip II as their king and Don Juan of Austria as their tutor;
Respect the Catholicism of the rebel provinces;
The Spanish, Italian, German, and Burgundian tercios should leave the country twenty days after the ratification of the edict by Philip II;
Both signatory parties renounce any alliance contrary to the edict;
General amnesty.
The arrival of Archduke Matthias with the claim of establishing himself as governor of the Netherlands and the utopia of returning the Protestant provinces to Catholicism turned the Perpetual Edict into a mere piece of paper.
