The German entry into Beveren met with severe resistance from French troops, after which the Germans took out their rage on the local population.
The German entry into the village
When they got to Beveren, the Germans encountered stubborn resistance from the French, especially at the railway line when moving out of the village heart. For this, the Germans vented their wrath against the civilian population. They fired off shots at random, and innocent civilians were killed.
The church of Beveren destroyed
On the night of 11/12 July 1918, British aeroplanes flew over Beveren. One of their targets was the church, to prevent it being used as an observation post in the event of an Allied advance. The British dropped five bombs on the village. Three of them hit the church and it sustained heavy damage.
