Soheila Sokhanvari, Iran - TPAJAX, 2012 and Luk Berghe, Belgium, 1954 - KOCMOC - we have never been

TPAJAX shows a mounted horse being immobilized by a giant, shiny balloon. The otherwise strong animal looks powerless here. The title of the work refers to a historical event that took place in Iran in 1953. TPAJAX refers to the orchestrated coup by the British and the US intelligence services on the democratically elected Iranian Prime Minister Mohammed Mosaddegh, in order to gain more control over the country's oil reserves.

KOCMOC - we have never been modern (A century later we move in a mental universe where each of us lives the experience of the actor in 1936), is a monumental painting that shows a giant zeppelin floating over the Lys landscape here. The demise of the zeppelin in 1937 resembles an almost orchestrated moment in history, in which the lust for modernity destroyed itself. Berghe literally brings the story of the Hindenburg closer to our time by adding logos of important news channels such as RT, CNN and Al Jazeera to his painting. He alludes to the contemporary geopolitical situation.
