Municipal cemetery Sint-Ulriks-Kapelle

Do you know why you can find many graves of Roma in Sint-Ulriks-Kapelle? It was here in the vicinity of this cemetery that Anna-Maria Rosenberg died on a winter Friday evening in 1940. A group of Roma then moved from East Flanders to Brussels. One of these was Manoch Modest . He was on his way to sell horses at the large horse market in Molenbeek. However, his wife Anna-Maria was seriously ill and died here a day later near this cemetery, where the caravans stopped. It was on a field at the intersection of Brusselstraat and Moerstraat. 13 years later Manoch Modest also died and was placed with the love of his life. Thus began a new tradition: members of his clan now come to this place to bury their dead close together. You will now find graves of their clan in the old cemetery as well as in the new cemetery of Sint-Ulriks-Kapelle.
