The Kleine Struisbeek flows through the campus towards the A12 and merges there with the Edegemsebeek. They are both tributaries of the Grote Struisbeek. The entire valley has a top layer of wet sandy loam soil, with impermeable Boomse clay underneath. This makes the landscape very rich in water and prone to flooding. A remarkable phenomenon is the 'kwel'. This is groundwater that bubbles up from the ground and is high in iron, giving the kwel pools a rusty color. These pools are the habitat for specific species such as the crested newt. The ponds are also attractive to other aquatic species such as the kingfisher and water buttercup.
