Middelheim

The current Middelheim Castle dates from around 1780 and already had a symmetrical park with statues (Middelheim-Hoog). Around 1850 the domain was enlarged with a part of the park in landscape construction (Middelheim-Laag). In 1910, the city purchased the estate and, together with Den Brandt, opened it as a public park. The sculpture museum was only opened in 1950 and initially consisted of the part south of the Middelheimlaan. One of the most striking landscape features of this part 'Middelheim-Hoog' is the double moat and the considerable forest stock with oaks and beeches. The domain is today decorated in an English style, with fairly natural-looking grasslands and woodlands. It was not until 1993 that the sculpture park was expanded with 'Middelheim-Laag', north of the Middelheimlaan. This part is a park-like mixed forest with, among other things, sweet chestnuts and a water structure. The sculpture park today has an extensive collection with works by Rodin, Henry Moore and Panamarenko, among others.
