Het Laar was already a hamlet in the 13th century along the road between Antwerp and Bergen-op-Zoom. The area was heavily forested at the time but gradually transformed into agricultural land with a few farms in a polder landscape. As early as 1520, there was mention of Laarkasteel, which originally consisted of a farm surrounded by moats and meadows. This estate grew into a real castle but eventually fell into disrepair. Today, only a part of the ruin can be found in the southwestern corner of the estate. In 1948, the ruin was largely demolished to build a doctor's residence near Sint-Lucas. That institution was housed in Hof ter Delft, which had already been constructed in the estate of Laar in 1903. For the open landscape, the area today is mainly valuable due to the historical orchards, fields, and meadows.
