In the center of Poelkapelle you will find the Guynemer Monument, as a tribute to the French pilot Georges Guynemer. With 53 dogfight victories, he is rightly a pioneer in war aviation. On 11 September 1917, German troops shot down Guynemer over Poelkapelle. His body was never recovered. This memorial was unveiled in July 1923. A stork adorns the top of the monument, referring to the 'Escadrille des Cigognes', the unit to which Guynemer belonged.
