In and around the Bergerven nature reserve, both wet trouser forests and dry forests occur. Both are home to a lot of typical plant and animal species.
On the drier soils there are both coniferous trees and nutrient-poor oak-birch forest that occurs naturally on this soil. Limburgs Landschap vzw gradually transforms the planted coniferous forests into that natural oak-birch forest by thinning. In the small clearings that arise, seedlings of oak or birch have the opportunity to germinate and thus gradually grow into an oak-birch forest.
