Everywhere from nature reserve Bergerven you can see the Zuid-Willemsvaart. This canal was not excavated, but manually 'built up' in the early 19th century. Canals are always laid quite flat, but that turned out to be almost impossible in this Kempen depression. Tons of soil had to be brought in to keep the Zuid - Willems canal at the same level between Dilsen and Bree.Near Bergerven, the canal makes a remarkable bend to the east. This is to avoid a spur of the Kempen plateau. It was easier to make a detour than to cut the spur. In the course of this century, the bend was made less sharp and 't Eilandje was created.
