After the Second World War, with the industrialization and intensification of agriculture, manual mowing and haying of the meadows in the Demer valley became too difficult. The meadows became overgrown and, as in many valleys, were planted with Canada poplars in order to still yield something. The flowery bushes and grasslands soon turned into nettles and blackberries.
