The Port House is the headquarters of Port of Antwerp-Bruges, as the harbor has been officially named since the merger with the port of Zeebrugge in 2022. The striking design by architect Zaha Hadid dates back to 2016. On top of a fire station from 1922 (protected as a monument), Hadid built a distinctive new section that resembles the hull of a ship with a protruding bow and a surface reminiscent of facets of a diamond.
The volume rests on two concrete tubes and four steel pillars. The two buildings only touch at one point, at the turret of the fire station. Incidentally, this fire station was almost identical in design to the Hanse House, which stood until 1893 where the MAS is today. The Hanse House was erected in the 16th century as the seat of the German trade federation. It was destroyed in a fire in 1893.
