The Grote Markt is there for the status and for the tourists, for the politicians on the Schoon Verdiep and for everyone who believes that Brabo defeated Antigoon. The Groenplaats is the real square of the sinjoren. 'The prince of Antwerp painters' is the most important resident. A statue of Rubens has been in the middle of the square since 1843. A 'committee' tasked with its establishment took seven years to accomplish this and ended up with a mountain of debt. In Rubens' time, it wasn't so pleasant here. At that time, this was the Groot Kerkhof, later called Groen Kerkhof. Rubens' statue replaced a large cross that stood on top of the grave of a bishop, who was reburied in the cathedral.
