The basis of the relief is formed by the tertiary deposits from the Eocene, specifically the Ypresian, Lutetian, and Bartonian. The Quaternary surface layer consists of aeolian Weichselian deposits, made up of sandy clay in the north and clay in the southern part of the area. These deposits are covered along the Maalbeek with Holocene alluvium. The aeolian deposit from the Weichselian is lithostratigraphically classified in the Ghent Formation concerning the sandy clay area and in the Gembloux Formation for the clay area. Beneath the aeolian cover layers, slope deposits can be found in the area west of the line Sint-Niklaashoeve – Lint. Geomorphologically, this area belongs to an eastern spur of the cuesta of Asse. The area to the east of the aforementioned line is part of the eastern spur of the Flemish Valley, where fluviatile deposits occur beneath the aeolian deposits.
