Treignes is also called "the museum village" because it has no less than five museums and some other tourist attractions. The cobbled streets, fountain and tranquillity make the village worth a detour.
Here are some tips for a pleasant day in Treignes.
• Train museum
The collection in the large hall includes steam trains, a steam tramway (year of construction 1894!), old diesel locomotives, passenger cars, etc. You will also find temporary thematic exhibitions. The collection gives you a beautiful picture of the railway of the past. The museum's four 110-metre-long tracks collect a range of exceptional railway equipment, including steam locomotives dating from the early 1900s and post-1950s, diesel car rails, 1900s passenger cars and maintenance equipment.
• At less than 1 km, you will find the Museum of Malgré tout (Despite everything).
It's a beautiful private archaeological collection. There are two permanent exhibitions: a room dedicated to the archaeology of the Viroin region and a prehistoric gallery. Each year, one or two temporary exhibitions are also organised. It's worth the detour!
• the Arthur Masson Space
Arthur Masson was a popular writer, such like Streuvels and Timmermans in Flanders. He has written many books with typical folk characters. A unique museum was built around the old school. With the audiophone (also in English), you walk along scenes that took your life. Through light and sound (in a juicy Walloon dialect) you are catapulted into time: a beautiful experience.
In front of the museum is a beautiful statue with a fountain representing the characters of Arthur Masson village.
On the other side of the street, you will find a visitor centre where you can drink a typical beer and buy many local products.
• The Ecomuseum of Viroin
The ecomuseum shows the tools of many craftsmen of the region, who brought the richness of the village and the region between Sambre and Meuse: carpenters, woodworkers, wooden flooring, hoofs, tattoos, carts, tile makers, maroquiniers,....
• Gallo-Roman villa - Archaeological site
At 300 m from the center of the current village, between agricultural land there was a villa from the first to the 4th century A. D., surrounded by its outbuildings on a surface of 6 hectares. The foundations were carefully restored between 1980 and 2000 and rehabilitated. The spacious space includes many subsections, including a large bathroom and cellar. It is very well preserved and has 5 niches and the beginning of a cellar hole. The building's sewer system is still partially visible. Archaeological material is in the process of being preserved at the NonethelessAll Museum. On site, there are 9 explanatory panels in three languages, illustrations and a picnic area.
