It is hard to believe, but the place where Hotel Amigo is now used to be a prison. And that prison had a very famous prisoner, if only for a very short time: Karl Marx. When Marx lived here in Brussels, the police tracked suspicious money transfers. The police suspected that Marx had received money to buy weapons. However, it was an inheritance. But Marx did end up in jail for that. He was later deported from the country and returned to Paris. A few years later he went to London, where he died in 1883.
