Het is moelijke te geloven, maar op de plaats waar nu Hotel Amigo staat was vroeger een gevangenis. En die had zelfs een heel beroemde gevangene, al was het maar voor een zeer korte tijd: Karl Marx. Toen Marx hier in Brussel woonde was de politie verdachte geldtransfers op het spoor. De politie vermoedde dat Marx geld had ontvangen om wapens te kopen. Het ging echter over een erfenis. Maar daardoor belandde Marx wel even in de cel. Hij werd het land uitgezet en keerde terug naar Parijs. Enkele jaren later ging het richting Londen, waar hij in 1883 overleed.
